Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump had an important 40-minute phone call discussing ways to improve peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday.

The call came right after Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington on Monday, where Trump described the talks as “very good.” After that meeting, Trump and Putin spoke and talked about the idea of “raising the level of representatives” involved in the Ukraine peace talks.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov explained that Putin and Trump discussed whether higher-level officials from both Russia and Ukraine could join the direct negotiations to help move the peace process forward. While Ushakov did not give details about what “raising the level” means exactly, this idea signals a push for more serious and high-profile discussions.

Trump also promised Zelenskiy that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine’s security as part of any peace deal, though details of that help were not clear yet.

Ushakov called the conversation “frank and highly constructive” and said both leaders agreed to stay in close contact on Ukraine and other important global and bilateral issues.

This phone call is a key development as the world watches closely for signs of progress toward ending the conflict in Ukraine.
