Modi-Trump Face-Off? Trade Talks Could Steal the Show at UN Meet

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States next month to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. During this visit, Modi is likely to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. This meeting comes at a crucial time as both countries have been facing tensions over trade and tariffs.

The UN General Assembly will officially start on September 9, but the main session where heads of state and government speak is set for September 23 to 29. India’s prime minister is tentatively scheduled to speak on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers. However, no final decision has been made about his participation yet.

While the official reason for Modi’s visit will be the UN meeting, a major goal is to resolve ongoing trade issues with the U.S. Over the past months, trade talks have been stuck due to disagreements over opening India’s agricultural and dairy markets, as well as India’s imports of Russian oil. Recently, President Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, taking the total duty to 50%, one of the highest tariffs imposed by the U.S. on any trading partner.

This prospective meeting is seen as a chance to mend strained ties and possibly announce a trade deal. It also could set the stage for a reciprocal visit by President Trump to India for the upcoming Quad summit in October.

In addition to Trump, Modi may also meet other world leaders such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the UN gathering. Both countries look to overcome their differences and strengthen diplomatic and trade relations moving forward.

The talks and the visit depend on various diplomatic and geopolitical factors, especially related to Russia-Ukraine tensions and ongoing trade negotiations. But if the meeting happens, it will be a significant step in reshaping India-U.S. relations amid recent challenges.

The situation is evolving, and preparations for Modi’s visit are reportedly underway, though official confirmations are still awaited.
