In a significant move, the Biden administration has announced the forgiveness of $1.2 billion in student loans. Here's who qualifies and what this means for borrowers
Good news for 35,000 people who work in
public service! The government is forgiving $1.2 billion in student loans for
teachers, firefighters, and others who have been helping their communities.
The people getting forgiveness today are part of a program called Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). It's designed to help people who work in public service, like teachers, nurses, and police officers, get their student loans canceled after 10 years of paying them back.
Who gets loan forgiveness?
The latest group of people getting student loan relief are those who are part of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This includes teachers, nurses, police officers, firefighters, and others who work in public service.
These individuals applied for a special waiver that allows them to get credit for past payments that didn't count towards loan forgiveness before. The deadline to apply for this waiver was October 2022.
President Joe Biden said: "These 35,000 public service workers have dedicated their lives to helping their communities. Because of the changes we made to the PSLF program, they'll now have more financial freedom to support themselves and their families."
Is the government planning more debt forgiveness?
Yes, the Biden administration is still working on a plan to forgive more student loans through the Higher Education Act.
