| Vladimir Putin And Donald Trump In Alaska Summit 2025

 |
President Donald Trump has called on Ukraine to make a deal to end the ongoing war with Russia, following a high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Despite hopes for a breakthrough, the talks ended without any ceasefire agreement or details about real progress. #TrumpPutinSummit #UkraineWar #DealForPeace
Both leaders said they made progress after nearly three hours of discussion, but did not say what was agreed or take questions from reporters, even as many shouted for more information. "We've made some headway," Trump told the press, speaking in front of a banner titled "Pursuing Peace." But he also added, "There's no deal until there's a deal."
Putin continued to stick to Russia’s usual position on Ukraine, saying that it was important to address the root causes of the crisis and Moscow's concerns. He agreed with Trump that Ukraine's security needs to be ensured but did not mention any new steps. Putin expressed hope that the recent talks would help bring peace closer, urging leaders in Kyiv and Europe to support the process and avoid causing trouble.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded after a call with Trump, saying Ukraine is open to constructive cooperation and will travel to Washington soon for further discussions. However, neither Trump nor Putin shared concrete plans for a ceasefire, a major goal of the meeting.
The war in Ukraine, now Europe’s deadliest conflict in decades, has killed or injured over a million people, including thousands of civilians.
Possible terms, but no clear agreement
Trump suggested to Fox News that land swaps and security promises for Ukraine were discussed and that "those are points we largely have agreed on." He sounded optimistic, saying a deal is pretty close, but warned that Ukraine would have to accept it and might still refuse.
When asked what advice he’d give to Zelensky, Trump said: "Gotta make a deal." He pointed out Russia’s military strength and hinted that the time was right to negotiate peace.
Some worried ahead of the summit that Trump and Putin could make a deal over Ukraine’s head. But these fears did not come true this time. Cold War expert Sergey Radchenko wrote on X, "Putin is a determined opponent, and, yes, he basically won this round because he got something for nothing. Still, Trump did not sell out Ukraine."
Trump also mentioned setting up a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy, possibly with him in attendance, but gave no details. Putin did not mention such a meeting, and Russian officials said it was not discussed.
Europe reacts and tension continues
After Trump flew back to Washington, he spoke to NATO leaders and had a long call with Zelensky. Norway’s foreign minister urged stronger pressure on Russia to pay for its invasion of Ukraine. Czech defense officials noted the summit did not bring real peace, saying Putin still tries to divide the West and spread propaganda.
Overnight, both sides carried out air attacks—a regular part of the ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine’s air defense reported shooting down 61 out of 85 drones launched by Russia.
Trump said tariffs talks on China buying Russian oil are now on hold after progress with Putin, but warned that future tariffs could return in the coming weeks. He also hasn’t followed through on sanctions threatened earlier this month when Putin ignored a Trump-imposed ceasefire deadline.
Drama in Alaska, next steps remain unclear
Putin's arrival in Alaska was dramatic, with a red carpet and U.S. military aircraft overhead. Trump greeted him warmly. Trump ended the event by thanking Putin, who replied in English, "Next time in Moscow." Trump joked that he might "get a little heat on that one" but didn’t rule out visiting Russia soon.
Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, a warrant the Kremlin rejects. The U.S. and Russia are not ICC members.
Ukraine's president earlier said he hoped the summit would open the door to a fair peace, but reminded everyone Russia was still fighting. "It's time to end the war, and the necessary steps must be taken by Russia. We are counting on America," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
